Vision

The Border Fair Housing and Economic Justice Center is a private, not-for-profit civil rights organization dedicated to affirmatively furthering fair housing, equal access to credit, economic justice, the development of decent and affordable housing, community development and expanding small business opportunities in the Colonias and communities in the Southwest United States, with 150 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

To achieve this vision, the BFHC will act as a private attorney general enforcing federal and state consumer laws. In addition, the BFHC will educate the community on their rights under the Fair Housing Act and other applicable consumer laws. The BFHC will develop and implement several initiatives to provide assistance to border communities who need assistance in the areas of Fair Housing, Consumer Protection, Financial Literacy, and Affordable Housing.

Our Mission

he mission of the Border Fair Housing and Economic Justice Center (BFHC) is to ensure greater compliance with federal, state and local laws through a multifaceted fair housing program that includes collaboration and partnership with the public and private sectors, education and outreach, counseling and advocacy, best practice initiatives, community development, research & planning and the enforcement of civil rights and consumer protection laws in the colonias and communities in the Southwestern United States, within 150 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. The Border Fair Housing and Economic Justice Center was founded in 2004 by public and private sector community leaders who live and work in the border region through support from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development's Fair Housing Initiatives Program and the National Community Reinvestment Coalition.

BFHC History

The Border Fair Housing and Economic Justice Center (BFHC) is a not-for-profit civil rights organization founded in April 2004 by visionary community leaders and advocates from both the private and public sectors and with support from the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC), a national not-for-profit civil rights membership organization whose mission is to increase fair and equal access to credit, capital, and banking services and products and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development´s Fair Housing Initiatives Program.

Through its multi-pronged approach at community development, the BFHC has established itself as a leader in the community´s fight for equality and socioeconomic justice through achieving its mission of ensuring greater compliance with federal, state and local laws through a multifaceted fair housing program that includes collaboration and partnership with the public and private sectors, education and outreach, counseling and advocacy, best practice initiatives, community development, research & planning, and the enforcement of civil rights and consumer protection laws in the colonias and communities in the Southwest United States, within 150 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

This continued commitment to promoting the socioeconomic development along the U.S.-Mexico border is evident in the various initiatives BFHC has created to address the following issues that affect adversely our border communities:

  • Emergency Food Distribution
